Week 7 Story: Bhima

John Mandeville Macfie

When Bhima arrived to Draupadi's place he is disguised as a cook. Bhima's incredible stretch and mastery in fighting had prepared for what was to come. Being the second born of the Pandava's, Bhima had a story of his own that he seldom told.

When Bhima was young, a man appeared in his dream revealing to him a secret that no other man on earth would ever know. He bestow up Bhima the gift of knowing events before they occurred. This was confusing to Bhima and at such a young age he did not know what to make of this. As he got older, he realized that he had thoughts of events and they later would happen. Like the secret he was told, Bhima was not to ever let anyone know of this gift he had been granted. At times he grew scared and other times it was relieving to him. Surrounded by older and younger brothers, he knew that no one would ever believe him. Every battle he fought he had foreseen but that did take away from his mighty strength and fighting tactics that were natural to him.

Arriving to Darpaudi’s, Bhima was not frightened; he knew what was ahead of them. He knew that he had to use this gift of his to help others. He confronted Kichaka for what he had done and snapped his neck. He felt great guilt for he could have stopped Kichaka in the act but he also knew that he could not intervene with the course of fate. Bhima wondered what would happen if he had disclosed of this gift or if he was to pass it on to someone else.

One night dreamt of the man again. Now at a much later age he was able to listen and interpret what he told him. Bhima was to pass this gift to a most righteous one that would be presented to him when time would come to a pause and he would be filled with the enlightenment to know who that would be. This frightened Bhima but he was ready; he knew this gift would save lives of many.

  1. Hey Catalina,

This was a very interesting story. I'm not sure where this story originated from, so applying an author's note would be helpful! The gift Bhima was given is so cool! I can see why he would be so frightened at a young age! Great story!

  2. What an interesting take on Bhima receiving a mysterious gift. It’s fun to imagine how the epic would be different if he used these powers for the brothers’ gain throughout their life events, though your explanation of why he would refrain from telling them is sound. In a world of magic and abilities, however, I wonder if they would really be that mystified or incredulous over his newfound powers. Thanks for sharing!

  3. Hi Catalina!

I thought this was a very interesting spin on how Bhima received his powers. I like how you included his guilt, even though he knew he should not tamper with fate. I hope you put this in your project. If you expand on this story in doing so , I would be excited to read it. You set up the story so well, remained true the original, and flawlessly added in your own twist. Well done!

  4. Hey Catalina,
I really enjoyed this story, it was a great read. I liked how you put a twist on how Bhima was able to receive his powers. This story is something that you could easily use for the project if it was expanded a little bit. This story also stayed true to the original which is not always easy to do.
